Identifying Local Opportunities

Article 1:
  • Twitter, Pinterest crack down on voter misinformation
  • https://www.gainesville.com/ZZ/news/20200130/twitter-pinterest-crack-down-on-voter-misinformation
  • The article talks about voter misinformation and how various social media platforms, specifically Twitter and Pinterest, are working to eliminate false information that pertains to voting time and locations as well as any advertisements that discourage people from voting.
  • The problem, in my opinion, is that there is not enough monitoring of what is posted about politics and elections on social media, especially during elections.
  • To me, the people who have the problem in this situation, are not only the people running in the elections, but also the voters, informed or otherwise. Even if you are trying to be an informed voter, it is hard to be informed when there is so much untruthful information going around about the elections.

Article 2:
  • 'Divine intervention' Tampa Bay man creates device for those with limited mobility after losing use of legs during battle with rare disease
  • wfla.com/news/wfla-plus/divine-intervention-tampa-bay-man-creates-device-for-those-with-limited-mobility-after-losing-use-of-legs-during-battle-with-rare-disease/
  • The article talks about a man who lost use of his legs due to a form of blood cancer. He creates a device that helps people with limited mobility that can be very useful for them and help them be much more self sufficient.
  • The problem seems to be that there are not enough devices and tools out there to help people with limited mobility and this man has seemed to start the process of creating more.
  • The main people who have the problem are people with limited mobility but there are others involved too, such as family members and friends who spend time with the people who have limited mobility.
Article 3:
  • Old Bay hot sauce sells out less than an hour after launch
  • https://www.wfla.com/news/viral-news/old-bay-hot-sauce-sells-out-less-than-an-hour-after-launch/
  • The article states that the Old Bay company released a hot sauce that was a huge success that was then promised to be re-released at a later date and put on shelves at stores to further satisfy the want of their customers.
  • The problem in the story seems to be that the company did not foresee their product being such a big hit, meaning they did not produce as much as they needed to.
  • The people who have the problem are the people who were not able to purchase the sauce now and have to wait until it is back in stock, as well as the Old Bay company seeing as how they could still be selling more of them if they had more sauce in stock.
Article 4:
  • Nashville's first downtown Whole Foods Market announces opening date
  • https://www.tennessean.com/story/money/2020/01/30/downtown-nashville-whole-foods-market-announces-opening-date/2854594001/
  • The article states that in downtown Nashville, there is a lack of grocery stores and that the residents need them. In the past year, a Publix was opened and the Whole Foods will open on February 28th.
  • The need in this situation is for more grocery stores in the downtown Nashville area, residents need to be able to get groceries in locations close to their homes and jobs.
  • The people who have the problem are mainly the residents, but can also be seen as the businesses missing out on the revenue they are missing by not having locations open in the area.
Article 5:
  • Soon, there may be a lot fewer emotional support animals, service dogs on airplanes
  • https://www.star-telegram.com/news/business/aviation/article239769983.html
  • The article describes that it has become a problem in air travel that many people are bringing their animals on the planes even when they are not actually service animals and do not perform a service for the person.
  • The problem seems to be that there are not enough regulations as to what types of animals may board airplanes and what types of service they must perform to be allowed to accompany their person on board.
  • The people who have the problem seem to be the airlines due to the fact that they have had a few incidences in which they have had to deal with animals misbehaving on flights when they were supposedly service animals.

  1. Hey Riley! I enjoyed reading through all of these news stories and seeing how the problems were identified. I was impressed with the variety of news stories you were able to find. You identified the problem very well but I think you could have included more people that have and experience the problem. Just like in class how we identify upwards of 10-15 people who the problem affects, you could think outside the box to find even more. For example, in the case of Old Bay selling out of sauce, the problem could apply to grocery store shoppers, the stores that the sauce is sold at because they aren't able to sell more and make more money, restaurants that use the sauce as an ingredient, Old Bay because they aren't continuing to make a profit since they are out of stock. Overall, you did a great job at finding problems out in the news!

  2. Hi Riley!
It's always so interesting finding out new stories and things going on where you live that you didn't know about, whether this information is good or bad. It wasn't a huge struggle to find news stories with problems, as unfortunate as this sounds. Its impressive that you were able to find such a variety of them! Your first article seems to be a very important one, since there are elections coming up this seems very relevant. There is always a big problem with having to fact check everything. It's hard because our generation is heavily reliant on social media as or 'news source' and people believe a lot of what they see on the internet. With the problem of misinformation, this could be a scary fact!

Reading Reflection Number 3

Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirky 1) The general theme of the book was talking about how previously, the majority of people spent their free time watching TV while now that has shifted a bit. Now, people are spending portions of their free time online collaborating with others whether it be a meaningful collaboration or not. These types of collaborations are creating what is called a cognitive surplus which addresses the excess productivity that happens outside of one's work.  2) I think that the book showed how someone might come up with an idea for a business venture. If you are constantly working on small projects with friends over the internet, it is very possible that one of those ideas could bee feasible and created to make money.  3) If I were to design an exercise based on the book I would make it a collaboration assignment. I would like for two to three students to work together to either fit together their venture ideas that are already in progress, or if that ...

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

2) Clearly state the opportunity you have identified, including the who, what, why. For instance, "Hospitals in the United States are unable to easily, efficiently bill Medicare for drugs they distribute because of the logistical challenges in linking a drug given to a patient and the patient's bill."  The who: Hospitals in the United States The what: They are unable to easily, efficiently bill Medicare for drugs they distribute to patients The why: Logistical challenges related to listing prescribed drugs on patients' bills 3) This is your 'hypothesis' about the opportunity. It is a statement of your belief related to an opportunity. I'd like you to test the boundaries of the hypothesis by pushing and prodding each of the three elements. That means: Testing the who: Are there others who have this need? Or, does everyone in your current 'who' share the need?  Testing the what: What are the boundaries of the need? For the example above, t...

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior Number 2

Interview 1: Alex explained to me that since she runs a business that she purchases things for frequently, she uses her business's card every day at least once a day but usually two to four times a day. She says she chose to open her business's bank account with the bank that she did based on their fees and interest rates, she did not ask about the type of card they use because she did not think it really matters. After I informed Alex of my idea for more durable debit cards she told me that if that was a thing that she could chose from she would have looked into it more and spent time looking into types of cards as well as fees and interest rates. Overall Alex seemed content with her choice based on fees and interest rates, however she is not happy with her card and the fact that it does not always work with card readers. Interview 2: Michelle says that she and her husband chose where they bank but that she didn't really have a preference. She has three kids and she ...
