Venture Concept Number 1

Opportunity:
The target group of people that would be potential customers are any people who have card issues when they are trying to pay using a pin pad at a store. The actual customer would be banks as a whole that partner with my company to then offer the card to individual customers at their banking institution. The changes in the environment could be due to new technology and the wider use of no contact payments such as apple pay and samsung pay. The market will tend to deal with customers who are in their mid 20s to late 40s, in my research, this is the group that was seem to have the most difficulty with their cards. Customers are not exactly satisfying this need now, they either get a new card every few months when theirs stops working or they continue to use their broken card and be frustrated. This opportunity seems to be a big one because there doesn't seem to be anything else like this being offered.

Innovation:
My product is a new type of card made from titanium that is not supposed to break or get damaged like the current cards do. It works the same as the current debit or credit cards do but it will hold up for a much longer period of time and be much more reliable. I will make money by partnering with banking institutions to give the cards to their members. The banks would pay me a flat rate along the lines of a subscription that is specific to the number of members they have that are using the card.

Venture Concept:
I believe that customers would switch to my product based on the level of reliability that I offer. It does not seem difficult to get customers to switch seeing as how a number of the targeted customers have to get new cards every few months and they could switch to my product at that time. At this time competitors are just the normal debit and credit cards, there is not another option like mine that works to improve reliability and durability of the card itself. I do not think that packaging or price point makes a large impact on thee product distribution, the product has much more to do with customer support and customer experience.  For production of the card, I would outsource to a factory that already produces cards and work with them to modify what needs to be changed for my product's production. I would need representatives to promote the product to banks and get them to partner with us as well as people actually talking to the customers.

The three minor elements:
I think that my most important resource would be that of my knowledge and experience with customers that have this issue. Next for the venture would really just be building up a customer base and working to expand who the product reaches and is able to help. I think that once launched, it is important to start by expanding to new customers and continuing to look out for the existing customers as well, it will be important to have resources available to those customers that are questioning what other options are available to make sure to retain them as customers.

  1. Hey Riley,
I think you did a good job with your venture concept, from the reader's point of view were are able to understand your vision for the business clearly. Your business has a massive advantage since other credit card companies do not use titanium their material. Furthermore, I like how you detailed the pricing between your company and the banks.

  2. Hi Riley,

I really like your post and agree with your product that you are creating. I have also had some struggles with my credit card and it can be frustrating for the workers as well. I believe that you will have an advantage because I haven't heard of a product like yours. Great job!

Reading Reflection Number 3

Cognitive Surplus by Clay Shirky 1) The general theme of the book was talking about how previously, the majority of people spent their free time watching TV while now that has shifted a bit. Now, people are spending portions of their free time online collaborating with others whether it be a meaningful collaboration or not. These types of collaborations are creating what is called a cognitive surplus which addresses the excess productivity that happens outside of one's work.  2) I think that the book showed how someone might come up with an idea for a business venture. If you are constantly working on small projects with friends over the internet, it is very possible that one of those ideas could bee feasible and created to make money.  3) If I were to design an exercise based on the book I would make it a collaboration assignment. I would like for two to three students to work together to either fit together their venture ideas that are already in progress, or if that ...

Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

2) Clearly state the opportunity you have identified, including the who, what, why. For instance, "Hospitals in the United States are unable to easily, efficiently bill Medicare for drugs they distribute because of the logistical challenges in linking a drug given to a patient and the patient's bill."  The who: Hospitals in the United States The what: They are unable to easily, efficiently bill Medicare for drugs they distribute to patients The why: Logistical challenges related to listing prescribed drugs on patients' bills 3) This is your 'hypothesis' about the opportunity. It is a statement of your belief related to an opportunity. I'd like you to test the boundaries of the hypothesis by pushing and prodding each of the three elements. That means: Testing the who: Are there others who have this need? Or, does everyone in your current 'who' share the need?  Testing the what: What are the boundaries of the need? For the example above, t...

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior Number 2

Interview 1: Alex explained to me that since she runs a business that she purchases things for frequently, she uses her business's card every day at least once a day but usually two to four times a day. She says she chose to open her business's bank account with the bank that she did based on their fees and interest rates, she did not ask about the type of card they use because she did not think it really matters. After I informed Alex of my idea for more durable debit cards she told me that if that was a thing that she could chose from she would have looked into it more and spent time looking into types of cards as well as fees and interest rates. Overall Alex seemed content with her choice based on fees and interest rates, however she is not happy with her card and the fact that it does not always work with card readers. Interview 2: Michelle says that she and her husband chose where they bank but that she didn't really have a preference. She has three kids and she ...
